Position Responsibilities
The School of Health and Wellness is currently inviting applications for a full-time Probationary Continuous Instructor in the Practical Nurse program, commencing as soon as a suitable candidate is found.

The Practical Nurse program is a two-year diploma that prepares students to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) following graduation and successful completion of the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam. It is an approved program by the CLPNA’s Education Standards Advisory Committee.

The Practical Nurse program provides exceptional opportunities to work closely with students, faculty and staff in a supportive environment that promotes innovation, scholarship, and commitment to student success. RDP offers an excellent professional development program that helps faculty to continuously develop skills, knowledge, and expertise specific to teaching and learning as well as their respective discipline.

For the 2024/2025 academic year, the Practical Nurse program will be offered in:
  • Red Deer
  • Drumheller
  • Ponoka
  • Rocky Mountain House
  • Stettler
  • Three Hills

Faculty may be assigned instructional workload that requires travel to urban and rural locations in addition to teaching on the RDP campus. Travel and related expenses will be reimbursed according to the Travel and Related Expenses policy. RDP’s PN program has multiple intakes and includes day, evening, and weekend clinical, lab, and theory instruction. Faculty may be assigned to instructional workload as required to support program needs.

Responsibilities of this position include (but are not limited to):
  • Teaching students in classroom, lab, and/or clinical settings with flexibility for both face-to-face and online course delivery.
  • Creating a stimulating, effective, and learner-centered environment.
  • Preparing, reviewing and/or updating course material.
  • Marking, grading, and evaluation of student work.
  • Providing ongoing feedback, guidance, and assistance to students.
  • Actively contributing and participating in program planning, curriculum development & review, project work, and scholarly activity.
  • Participating in School and Polytechnic-wide initiatives and/or committees.
  • Upholding the Professional Responsibilities of Faculty at RDP, which are described within the Faculty Performance Policy.
  • Demonstrating and promoting RDP organizational values and following RDP policies and practices.

Required Qualifications
  • RN with a BScN degree; or LPN Diploma with a health care related degree.
  • Current registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) or the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA)
  • A minimum of five years nursing experience
  • Recent clinical / practical experience
  • Recent Clinical experience
  • Experience teaching in a post-secondary environment
  • Current Heart and Stroke Foundation Basic Life Support Provider or Recertification Certificate
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • A satisfactory Criminal Record Check in accordance with the Polytechnic’s Criminal Record Check policy
  • Current immunizations as per RDP requirements
  • Excellent communication, public relations and interpersonal skills
  • Passion for teaching, ability to inspire students, and commitment to student learning and success
  • Ability to work effectively in a variety of team environments
  • Proven commitment to continuous learning and reflective practice

Salary Commensurate with education and experience.
Benefits and Compensation Information
This role is classified as a Continuous Probationary Instructor. Continuous Probationary Instructors at Red Deer Polytechnic are employed full-time throughout the entire year. They participate in a probationary period which shall normally be three years in length.

The Faculty Association at Red Deer Polytechnic (FARDP) and the related collective agreement provides further information on compensation and probationary, continuous appointment positions for Instructors at Red Deer Polytechnic

Compensation for this role is determined by the highest academic credential received and related experience.

The successful candidate will also receive:
  • 45 days of paid vacation annually in addition to paid time off due to Institution closures between Christmas and New Year
  • Comprehensive benefits health and dental package, including a Health Spending Account.
  • Individual professional development funding, additional free professional development opportunities offered through the institution, and tuition free classes.

*Eligibility to access the above mentioned benefits dependent upon the FARDP Collective Agreement and related RDP policies.
