Position Responsibilities
The School of Arts and Education seeks a sessional instructor in History for an 8.5-month contract.

The successful candidate will teach four History or Classics courses in each of the Fall 2024 and Winter 2025 terms.

Preference will be shown to candidates with a demonstrated ability to teach a variety of European, American, and world history courses with broad chronological and thematic coverage. However, the exact selection of courses in the workload will depend on the expertise of the successful candidate.

The desired workload is the following:

Fall Term:

CLAS 1209 “Ancient Greece and Rome”
HIST 1207 “Early Modern World”
HIST 2362 “The United States since 1865”
HIST 2351 “The British Empire”

Winter Term:
HIST 1208 “The World Since 1789”
HIST 1209 “Medieval World History”
HIST 2315 “Cold War Europe, 1945-195
HIST 2327 “The European Witch Craze”

Survey courses in Canadian history (pre- and post-1867) and thematic courses may be substituted into the schedule depending on candidate expertise.

Faculty at RDP are encouraged to engage in scholarship and research (particularly applied research). An active programme is thus an asset, but not a requirement for a sessional appointment.

All full-time sessional employees are expected to contribute substantive, reasonable service to the program, school, or institution.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must have:
  • an MA in History or a cognate discipline
  • experience teaching at the postsecondary level
Preferred Qualifications
Our ideal applicant has:
  • a PhD in History or a cognate discipline
  • experience teaching post-secondary history courses at the junior and intermediate level
  • experience teaching online and face-to-face

Benefits and Compensation Information
Red Deer Polytechnic offers a comprehensive benefits package including Alberta Blue Cross extended health and dental plans, and health spending account. There is a tuition waiver for RDP credit courses for you as well as your immediate family members, as well as opportunities for professional development funding. The Local Authorities Pension Plan is also offered as an option to those who have served a waiting period. There is paid time off due to Institution closures between Christmas and New Year general holidays.

This position also offers an additional 8% of the regular salary in lieu of vacation.
